Using Project Containers
Learning materials are organized using containers in Torus. Containers are identified hierarchically with project labels. This helps the author to create folders to organize content within. The typical project labels in torus are as follows:
- Unit
- Section
- Module
- Page
Pages are the container type that hold text, media, and activities. Units, Sections, and Modules organize around Pages. The containers are used in the "Curriculum" view in the Torus authoring platform, where authors host their materials.
Project container options appear differently depending on where they are nested. In a brand new project, the curriculum project view is blank. In a populated project, there may already be containers and pages in this project view. Every container option is located at the bottom of the current curriculum view. The first option for a container is a "Unit", unless it was renamed to a different label. For more on project labels, see
Customize Project Labels.
Creating a Unit
To create a unit in your Torus project:
- Navigate to the Curriculum menu by going to "Create" -> "Curriculum"
- Below, along the "Create" menu, select "Unit".
- A unit container will appear on your page.
Any page can be added in place of a container, but a container will nest pages within it.Creating Modules and Sections
Module container options are found inside of Units, and Section container options are found inside of Modules.
To Create a Module
- Click into any Unit container.
- Navigate to the "Create" menu and select "Module".
The "Module" option is only available when nested within a Unit.To Create a Section
- Click into any Module container.
- Navigate to the "Create" menu and select "Section."
Section will only appear when nested within a Module.

Sections are the only container that can be nested within the same type of container. A sub-section can be nested within a section.
Course authors with larger projects tend to use more containers than smaller projects. Torus automatically creates a breadcrumb menu for easier navigation between containers for all courses. This menu can be found at the top of the Curriculum interface on every page.
Clicking on any of the hyperlinked pages navigates back to that container.
