Quick Answer
Torus uses the same data for both student and instructor views. Differences are rare and usually caused by multiple accounts, multiple enrollments, or a misunderstanding about completed work.
How does Torus capture student progress and work?
Torus records student activity in several ways:
Production database
LMS grade passback logs
xAPI statements that support our research logs
These systems are semi-independent, but we are not aware of any situation in which they would all fail to capture a student’s progress or submitted attempts.
Do students and instructors see different data?
No. Both the student view and the instructor view are based on the same database tables, so the information displayed should be identical.
Why might a student report work I cannot see in my instructor view?
This can happen for several reasons:
Multiple accounts The student may have completed work in a different account.
Multiple enrollments The student may have completed work in another section, either by accident or because they moved from one section to another.
Mistake The student may be mistaken about whether they visited a page to record progress or submitted an attempt on the intended assignment.
Did Not Submit A student may have answered all the questions in an assignment and forgot to submit. There is no score, but the instructor and student can view the attempt and see the entered answers.
