D2L Brightspace: Integrate Torus with Brightspace, and add a link to your Brightspace class
This set of instructions is meant for BOTH the Brightspace admin and the instructor, to add OLI Torus links to a D2L Brightspace class.
Steps 1 through 4 are for the Brightspace admin to add and register Torus as an LTI external tool.
Step 5 is for the instructor (or the admin) to add a Torus link to a Brightspace class, so Torus content can be delivered to students.
NOTE: if you integrate OLI Torus in your test environment, you will need to follow these directions again to integrate in your production environment.
STEP 2: Set up an OLI Torus deployment
Immediately after registering OLI Torus Details modal will open. Click VIEW DEPLOYMENTS > NEW DEPLOYMENT
Registration Details page that's presented after registering OLI Torus.
- If you've dismissed the details shown above, click ADMIN TOOLS > EXTERNAL LEARNING TOOLS > LTI ADVANTAGE tab > NEW DEPLOYMENT.
- In the tool dropdown select the new OLI Torus registration.
- Name (OLI Torus, for example)
- Extensions: Assignments and Grade Services: YES; Names and Role Provisioning Service: YES.
- Org Unit Information: YES
- User Information (top level): YES
- Classlist including users not known to this deployment: YES
- Open as External Resource: YES
- Grades created by LTI will be included in Final Grade: YES
- Add Org Units to share the tool with the appropriate orgs. Typical option is "This org unit and all descendants" if applicable.
- Copy Deployment ID for next step.
- Navigate to the OLI Torus deployment configuration page (ADMIN TOOLS > EXTERNAL LEARNING TOOLS > LTI ADVANTAGE tab > OLI TORUS)
- At bottom of page click VIEW LINKS
- Click NEW LINK and a new page will open
- Enabled: YES
- Give link a name, such as OLI - Torus
- URL: https://proton.oli.cmu.edu/lti/launch
- Type: BASIC LAUNCH
- Click SAVE AND CONTINUE
STEP 4: Register your Deployment ID with Torus
Launch OLI Torus one time to register your Deployment ID with OLI, completing the integration process. This step sends your Deployment ID and other important information to OLI to finish up the integration.
- Navigate to the OLI Torus deployment configuration page (ADMIN TOOLS > EXTERNAL LEARNING TOOLS > LTI ADVANTAGE tab > OLI TORUS) and copy the Deployment ID.
- Navigate to any Brightspace course. It can be a production course where OLI Torus will be used with students, or a test course.
- In the menu click CONTENT, and then click ADD A MODULE and give it a name.
- Click EXISTING ACTIVITIES > EXTERNAL LEARNING TOOLS
- In the Add Activity modal that pops up, select OLI - TORUS (look for whatever you named it in Step 3)
- Click your new OLI - TORUS link and a new tab should open, labeled "Welcome to Torus!" with a form named "Register Your Institution."
- Fill out the form and select D2L from the LTI 1.3 Configuration field, and click REGISTER
- Most fields will autopopulate. If there is a blank Deployment ID field, paste it. If you don't see a field, it has already been communicated to OLI behind the scenes.
- Leave "Line items service domain" empty
- This will send a Registration request to OLI, who will approve it. If you don't hear back by the next business day, email OLI Tech Support.
- When the Registration request has been approved, a notification email will be sent to the address included in the registration form.
- Next time any OLI - Torus link is launched, it will result in the Create Course tool.
STEP 5: Add an OLI Torus link to a Brightspace class
Now that the OLI Torus integration is complete, you can add a link to your Brightspace course.
- Navigate to your Brightspace course.
- In the menu click CONTENT, and then click ADD A MODULE and give it a name.
- Click EXISTING ACTIVITIES > EXTERNAL LEARNING TOOLS
- In the Add Activity modal that pops up, select OLI - TORUS (look for whatever it was named in Step 3)
- Click your new OLI - TORUS link and a new tab should open to the Create Course Section tool
- Follow the prompts to configure a course from your desired course topic. If you don't see the expected course topic, please email OLI Tech Support so we can help.
