Quick Torus Terminology
- Learning Materials / Materials - Learning materials refers to the content within projects and course sections that aid in student learning. This can be text, images, videos, assessments, and other elements within a course that contain the material used for student learning.
- Curriculum - the “Curriculum” in the Authoring platform is where learning materials are held, somewhat like a text-editor. “Curriculum” in the Instructor view is where those learning materials are outlined and organized.
Background - Customizing Your Students’ Learning Experience
Torus Authors create projects, which is where learning materials are written and assembled. When those projects are published, Torus instructors can build course sections using those projects.
Sometimes, different projects can contain the learning materials that an instructor wants to give to their students. Rather than creating two course sections, an instructor can create a course section using one project, and add materials from another project into the same course section.
Customizing Curriculum
In the Course Section of your choice, navigate to the “Manage” Tab.
Scroll down to the label that says “Curriculum”. Select “Customize Curriculum”.
The “Customize Curriculum” page displays the current units, modules, and pages included in the Course Section.
Navigating Between Course Section’s Curriculum
Torus organizes content in projects within Units, Modules, Sections, and Pages. For an Author’s perspective on content organization, see Organizing Your Torus Project in the Authoring section of the knowledge base.
In the “Customize Content” view, click on any container with blue text to access the next container.
To move back to the larger container, select the previous container in the breadcrumb trail at the top of the view.
Add Materials
To add materials to your course section, scroll down on the Customize Content view and select “Add Materials.
A box will appear with current published projects, available for use amongst course sections. These projects are made available by Torus authors.
Select the project, or content source, you want to add material from. You can also use the search bar to search for content sources.
These are the current available projects for the search term "chem".
Selecting the desired content source will reveal the units, modules, sections, and pages of that project. To navigate through them, click on the containers, and use the breadcrumb trail above to navigate back to previous containers.
To select content, whether it be entire containers or just single pages, click the checkbox to the left of the container.
The content added will now be visible in the course curriculum.
Rearrange Materials
Rearranging course material changes the sequential order in which the material is encountered by students. This can be done regardless of whether or not you have added new material to the course.
Because added course material appears at the bottom of the containers, it is recommended to move the added material to the desired place.
Drag and Drop Ordering
To simply rearrange the order of a container, without moving the content in or out of other containers, simply select the container and drag and drop it to the desired location.
Moving In and Out of Containers
To move content in and out of other containers, select the “move” button on the right of the banner.
A box with the current containers will pop up. Select in and out of those containers to find the desired location. Use the breadcrumb trail at the top to navigate between containers.
Select the “Move” button to confirm the location.
Remove Materials
To remove any unwanted materials, including materials that were in the base source, simply click the red “Remove” button at the far right of the content bar.
Confirm that you want to delete the material by clicking “Remove” on the pop up box.
Managing More Granular Materials
The content being managed goes down to the page level. The most important aspect of this feature in Torus is navigating between the containers on every level of the feature. Single pages can be added, rearranged, and removed.
Any of the functions demonstrated in this article can be performed on any container or page, regardless of granularity. Before rearranging or deleting any containers, check the contents of the container to ensure nothing necessary is deleted. If that is the case, content can always be re-added using the “Add” function.
