Blackboard: Integrate Torus with Blackboard, and add a link to your Blackboard shell
This set of instructions is meant for BOTH the Blackboard admin and the instructor, to add OLI Torus links to a Blackboard class shell.
Steps 1 through 3 are for the Blackboard admin to add and register Torus as an LTI external tool.
Step 4 is for the instructor (or the admin) to add a Torus link to a Blackboard class shell, so Torus content can be delivered to students.
NOTE: if you integrate OLI Torus in your test environment, you will need to follow these directions again to integrate in your production environment.
These instructions are taken from the Blackboard documentation and revised.
- On the Administrator Panel, under Integrations, select LTI Tool Providers.
- Select Register LTI 1.3/Advantage Tool.
- Enter the Client ID 56d51bb1-4322-4b4d-a79e-d9c3a41752b3
- Select Submit. OLI Torus's configuration settings from the Developer Portal will be shown on the page.
- After Saving, select Tool Status Approved, and, for User Fields to Send, select Role in Course, Name, and Email Address. Finally, select Allow Grade Service Access and Allow Membership Service Access, then Submit.
Note: If Tool Status is not set to Approved, it will result in an error message saying the tool is disabled. - By selecting Yes in the Allow Membership Service Access section, the tool can ask for all or any subset of users in a course (instructors and students). If you select No, the tool won’t be able to access that information and the option Show User Acknowledgment Message becomes available. By selecting Yes in that option, you can show a custom message to your users, for example: “You’re about to launch a 3rd party LTI tool.
STEP 2: Manage the OLI Torus placement
After Torus has been added, Select Manage Placements by clicking the down arrow next to the Tool name.
- On the Manage Placements screen, select Create Placement and fill in the Label and Handle with a name of your choice. This name will appear to instructors in their course sections. We suggest “OLI - Torus”.
- Also on the Create Placement page, under Type, select Course Content Tool and Allows Grading, and then select Launch in New Window.
- Finally, on the Create Placement page, under Tool Provider Information, in the Target Link URI field, type https://proton.oli.cmu.edu/lti/launch and click Submit.
STEP 3: Register Blackboard to connect with OLI
- The first time you launch Torus from a newly integrated LMS, you must register your institution.
Note: If you do not complete this step, the first person who launches Torus (such as instructor) will be shown the Registration screen. We recommend you do this in advance of your instructors needing to connect to Torus, because an OLI Admin must take the step of accepting your registration, which may take up to 24 hours. If you have not received approval in 24 hours, or need it more quickly, content OLI Support. - Launch a Torus link to reveal the Register form:
Register Your Institution form, which asks the LMS admin to fill out the institution name, URL, and their address.
- Fill in your institution name (full name please), your institution's URL, and the email address of your Blackboard admin (or an email the Blackboard team can access; this email is not published, it's just for OLI in case of emergencies).
- Select Blackboard in the last field, and review the URLs that are prepopulated. Leave "Line items service domain" empty, and click Register.
- OLI will review and approve your Registration request.
STEP 4: Add OLI Torus to a Blackboard shell
- Next time any OLI - Torus link is launched, it will result in the Create Course tool.
